The CAN bus

A Controller Area Network (CAN bus) is a vehicle bus standard designed to allow microcontrollers and devices to communicate with each other's applications without a host computer. It is a message-based protocol, designed originally for multiplex electrical wiring within automobiles to save on copper, but it can also be used in many other contexts such as marine.

NMEA2000 networks

NMEA2000 (IEC 61162-3) is a communication standard used in the maritime industry for connecting e.g. engines, instruments and sensors on boats. It is based on the Controller Area Network (CAN) and allows data to be sent/received between devices over a single network 'backbone' cable.
